God Must Be Our Compass

In 1929 almost nobody thought “blind” flight was possible. Countless pilots had flown into fog, crashed, and died. But then a brash young stunt pilot named Jimmy Doolittle, who would later gain fame as a World War II hero, trained himself to rely totally and completely on instruments – a gyrocompass, an altimeter, and a radio receiver. In what many thought would be a suicide mission, Doolittle covered his cockpit with a canvas hood, took off in his plane, flew for 15 miles, and then safely landed.

In John 20: 21 Jesus said, “As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you.” It may seem a daunting mission, perhaps even impossible, to reach this dark world for Jesus. But we cannot rely on our senses for this assignment, because our senses will betray us. In the darkness, down may seem up, and we will lose sight of the horizon. And for sure, people will tell us what a foolish course we’ve chosen. But there is an instrument – God’s Word, the Holy Bible – it’s all the guide we need, if we have the courage to rely on it totally and completely.

From July 12 to 15 our church is sending a mission team to Cincinnatti, Ohio to minister to the Bridge City Church family and area. From October 16 to 24 some 250 Sons of Jubal and Jubalheirs, including several members of our church, are sending a mission team to Cuba, to share the gospel in music in that dark country. Please pray for both mission trips. The world promises a form of happiness that is an illusion, like the fog that the early plane pilots crashed and died in. Its seekers find only disorientation and devastation. We’ve got to trust God for our navigation. With Jesus Christ as our compass, we will land safely.

Your servant, Pastor Phillip
