The True Beauty of Christmas
When someone talks about the beauty of Christmas time, it usually has to do with a few options. Is it the Christmas decorations? Christmas trees, wreaths, and lights of all colors cover our homes, living rooms, and communities. This is beautiful! Maybe it’s not that. Maybe when we think of the beauty of the Christmas season, we think of the Christmas spirit. People are often much more kind, hospitable, and generous during the Christmas season. What if it’s not that? Maybe when we think of the beauty of the Christmas season, we think of the Christmas memories. The crazy lives we live slow down and we get special family time together unlike any other time of the year and get to make memories. These are all beautiful things!
Although these things are beautiful, are these the foundation of what truly makes the Christmas season beautiful? Absolutely not. The truth that Jesus Christ stepped into our mess to rescue us is the true beauty of Christmas. The beauty of Christmas will always be Christ!
There is so much apparent goodness and beauty in our world that we can be so forgetful that Jesus Christ came to a world that was far from God, dark, broken, lost, and hopeless. We sang one of the greatest summaries of Christmas this past Sunday from King of Kings by Brooke Ligertwood:
In the darkness we were waiting
Without hope, without light
'Til from Heaven You came running
There was mercy in Your eyes
To fulfill the law and prophets
To a virgin came the word
From a throne of endless glory
To a cradle in the dirt
We can decorate a broken world to look beautiful during Christmas time, but this world was in darkness waiting for the light of the world. This hopeless world was waiting for a living hope. This whole earth was waiting on a miracle from Heaven. This rebellious world was in need of mercy. This world was waiting on a promise to be fulfilled. This world was waiting for Jesus Christ, and he came!
Enjoy the beauties of Christmas, but remember to keep them in the right order!
Love you, church! Pastor John Roberts
