What’s in a Name?
What’s in a name? Apparently, a lot if you’re rich and famous. You’d never recognize the talents of Charles Carter, Eugene Orowitz, or Caryn Johnson unless you knew their stage names of Charlton Heston, Michael Landon and Whoopi Goldberg. For celebrities, how they identify themselves, determines your perception of them; or at least how they hope you see them.
This was also true of Jesus Christ. “Son of Man” was Jesus’ preferred title for Himself, used over 70 times in the Gospels, and never by anyone else but Him. Mark 14:62, “And Jesus said, ‘I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven’.” Scholars believe He chose Son of Man because it identified Him as the one perfect man who would destroy the power of death through His crucifixion and resurrection.
Being a Worship Pastor, I find great joy in songs that elevate Jesus’ many wonderful names. His self-titled name, Son of Man, has always fascinated me enormously. One of my favorite songs is “What a Beautiful Name” by Ben Fielding and Brooke Ligertwood. Please spend time today praising Jesus’ beautiful, wonderful, and powerful name.
See Christ in a new way sitting in authority over your life by trusting Him with the challenges of your life, and by identifying yourself with His character and example. Live up to the name He has given you, Child of God.
Your servant in Christ, Phillip
