Comforted & Confident in Our Sovereign God

The Psalmist in Psalm 2 wrote these words:

“Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers conspire together against the Lord and his Anointed One: “Let’s tear off their chains and throw their ropes off of us.”

The people of this world rage and take their stand against the Lord. We live in a world that many by their very hearts conspire against God. They are against the Lord and his Anointed One, his coming King. People find themselves planting their feet to stand against Jesus.

What should we do with this reality? How do we respond? I think it’s helpful for us to see how God responds. In verse 4, the psalmist stated, “The one enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord ridicules them.”

God laughs, not because he thinks it’s funny, but for it to say He “laughs” implies that He is completely unconcerned with the schemes of those who take their stand against him. They are unable to take him down and to thwart his plans. The Lord ridicules them because they plot in vain, their plans are pointless because they will be unsuccessful.

It is such a comforting thing to me that the power of hell and the schemes of man do not concern or cause an ounce of worry to our God, because He is sovereign over all. His words do not return void. His plans will not be overcome. His power cannot be overpowered. We have every reason to be confident and comforted in our God.

My encouragement to us falls in line with the words of In Christ Alone, a wonderful song of praise we sing:

No power of hell, no scheme of man

Can ever pluck me from His hand

Till He returns or calls me home

Here in the power of Christ I'll stand

Stand in the power of Christ, brothers and sisters. He stands firmly, unwavered by the evil plans and schemes of this broken world.

Love you church, Pastor John
